8 JUNE 2011 IS REDBRIDGE HATCHET JOB DAY

WEDNESDAY JUNE 8 2011 IS REDBRIDGE HATCHET JOB DAY - the first stage of four leading to the total disbandment of the borough's Parks Police.

To those now facing unemployment I say: residents of the borough appreciate the work you have done for us even if the ConLib coalition of councillors does not. Residents hope that you will find what you are looking for.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO BOOTING THIS LOT OUT ON 1 MAY 2014.

  1. Perhaps it is time to think beyond the present situation to how we live with the reality of the loss of our Parks Police.

The "uptake" of Parks Police in Greater London was never that widespread. It is thus difficult to get support for the continuation of Parks Police at London-wide level. Boroughs "currently" with Parks Police are:

    Hammersmith and Fulham
    Redbridge
Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
    Wandsworth

The following have fairly recently been disbanded:

Barking and Dagenham Parks Constabulary (disbanded 2010)
Haringey Parks Constabulary (disbanded 2009) replaced by Parkforce
    Newham Community Constabulary (disbanded 2009)
    Sutton Parks Constabulary (disbanded 2007)

Brent had a short lived "Parks Police" in the 1990's as did Barnet in the mid-80's. Enfield has (since 2005) a "Safer Neighbourhoods Parks Unit" unofficially known as "Parks Police" and there are similar schemes in Harrow and Hounslow. Hillingdon has a Parks Patrol Service

Some of these "constables" have (or have had) a shared role as security staff for their own local authority's buildings and housing estates with appropriate changes of badges and/or uniform being made when changing to/from park duties.

So maybe we should be lobbying MP's and GLA Members for changes in legislation to extend (for example) the Met Police Royal Parks Operational Command Unit to included at minimum designated Metropolitan Open Land so as to get "Country Parks" patrolled and then start up schemes such as Haringey or Enfield using "Friends" groups and SNTs
